Art Galleries in Copenhagen

If you think Copenhagen’s art scene is just about the big museums, think again. The city’s full of smaller galleries tucked into neighborhoods like Vesterbro and Nørrebro where you can stumble upon cutting-edge artists or classic Danish painters in surprisingly intimate settings.

One of my favorites is Den Frie Udstilling on Østerbro, an old industrial space turned art venue that feels so Copenhagen , slightly rough around the edges but full of unexpected finds. Don’t miss the chance to pop into Galleri Christoffer Egelund nearby, where emerging Nordic talent often shows new work.

And here’s a tip: go during open gallery nights, usually once a month, when several spots open their doors late. The city feels different then, a bit like a secret art crawl with locals drinking coffee and chatting about the latest exhibit. Also, keep an eye out for ephemeral exhibitions along the canals or in converted warehouses around Refshaleøen, especially in spring and summer.

Art galleries in Copenhagen aren’t just about looking, either. Many have cafés or bookshops that invite you to linger, sip something warm and soak up the Danish art vibes. For a breather, I often head to RØM, a humble eatery next to a few small galleries in Vesterbro,good food and even better chats with locals about what’s currently on show.
