Frederiksborg Castle and Museum near Copenhagen
Frederiksborg Castle, located 35 minutes north of Copenhagen, suits visitors interested in Renaissance architecture, Danish history, and art collections.
Description
Frederiksborg Castle is a Renaissance castle built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV. The castle sits in the middle of Castle Lake, surrounded by a Baroque Garden and a romantic landscaped garden. The site offers cultural experiences, garden walks, and summer boat trips with The Small Ferry.
The castle houses the Museum of National History and the Danish National Portrait Gallery. It features hundreds of portraits and history paintings depicting key figures and events in Denmark’s past. The portrait collection is the largest in Denmark and continues to grow.
The Baroque Garden, dating from the 1720s, features symmetry, sculpted trees, and royal monograms of Frederik IV. This contrasts with the nearby romantic landscape garden, including winding streams, forests, Frederik II’s Bath House Castle (built in 1580), and Countess Danner’s Norwegian-inspired cabin on an island in one of the lakes.
The museum restaurant, Rabarbergaarden Slottet, in the former stable building, emphasizes sustainable, local, and organic ingredients in its farm-to-table kitchen. It is located within the largest Renaissance complex in the Nordics.
Your entry ticket includes access to the castle, museum, exhibitions, Baroque Garden, and a free digital audio guide via a mobile app. The app also allows scanning artwork for additional information.
