Very nice choice of danish "smørbrød" ,tasty and reasonable price, friendly service. Sitting area was clean and goos place, but was not 100% family friendly as there were no child chairs.
The Smorrebrod is delicious and freshly prepared. Whilst the roast beef and the meatball was nice, the smoked salmon was stellar, with amazing succulent flavour a dash of fish roe. That one pairs particularly well with the dry rye beneath it. Up on the 5th floor of the store, you can get incredible views of the playhouse from the window seats. Service is poor compared to the price tag, situation and food and felt lacklustre to the upscale vibe of the place - tables now cleared or wiped etc. However, overall experience still very good!
Let's just say that my curiosity got the better of me when trying smørrebrød for the first time. I mean, can you really say you've been to Copenhagen without trying it? I'll start by saying that Hallernes is probably the best place to get a traditional Danish open-faced sandwich. The location that we visited was at Magasin du Nord on Kongens Nytorv. It's in the gourmet food market in the basement. There's also a larger restaurant location on the 5th floor that we didn't know about at the time. It appears to be the largest location and the most popular for the view. The service was good. The young lady at the counter answered all of our questions. We had been told earlier that day that the best time to get smørrebrød is at lunch time. We visited around 5:30 pm which may have been a little late although it didn't seem to affect the quality of the toppings. I originally wanted the salmon one that I had seen the day before. It was sold out. I ended up getting the Curried Herring and the Celery Salad. My husband selected the Chicken Salad. I totally appreciated the presentation and the pickled herring. That one was actually better than expected with the curried mango. The Celery Salad with mushrooms was not my favorite. I really believe that herring, salmon, or shrimp is the way to go here. I'm giving a rating of 4 stars for the experience even though I didn't love the smørrebrød. My husband wasn't a big fan either. But hey... we tried something new! With that said, I'd still want to try the salmon one next time we're in Copenhagen. I really liked the food market setup in the basement of this department store where you can also get coffee, breads, licorice, and bakery items. It was a very cool food exploration!
As a tourist, i wasn’t immediatly aware that the restaurant was on the fifth floor, but i found the info on the website. Once i got there, i found very agreable service and good food for a very reasonable cost, and I even got a special offer. I recommend!
Visiting Copenhagen I was looking for somewhere for a snack. There are lots of choices of places to eat. I had gone to the fifth floor of Magasin du Nord where I planned to get some coffee. They had a wonderful food department in the basement, which reminded me of Selfridges in London. While I was up there I noticed Hallernes Smørrebrød which sold some amazing looking Smørrebrød (open faced sandwiches). They had a lovely looking variety, egg and prawn, beef tartare, chicken, roast beef, potato and roasted pork. I was tempted by virtually all of them, but I chose the roast pork version. This was roast pork, crackling, pickles, on traditional rye bread. You do need to use a knife and fork to eat this kind of sandwich and it was delicious. I really liked the flavour, the pickles offsetting the richness of the pork. I also enjoyed the rye bread as well. I thought to myself, if I am hungry later, I am coming back for another sandwich. Also lovely views from the fifth floor windows.
