Museums

The Bakkehus Museum is a museum of literature and cultural history in a 19th century home. The couple Kamma and Knud Lyne Rahbek lived here, and created a space for artists, writers and creative personalities to meet during the Danish Golden Age--a period famous for its fine artistic endeavors.

The museum, located in Frederiksberg area of Copenhagen, allows the visitor to get an authentic feel for the mood and atmosphere that the house would have exuded at the time.

Bakkehus has its origins the 17th century, and the name--Hill House--refers to its position on Valby Hill, which is the highest in Copenhagen. Bakkehus has even been a hostel and farm with four wings. There has been a museum at Bakkehus since 1925.

The Bakkehus Museum itself opened in 1925 under the name of The Rahbek Memorial Rooms. The museum was then extended with memorial rooms for the poets Johannes Ewald and Adam Oehlenschläger. In 2002, the museum opened a new wing to the public showing a reconstruction of the Rahbeks’ kitchen. There are also the museum library and two rooms that are used for temporary exhibitions. The building is today owned by Frederiksberg Municipality and is surrounded by a quaint public park and a private museum garden.

Guided tours are available, and there is a small shop selling postcards, books and posters relating to the Bakkehus Museum.

If you are in Frederiksberg and would like see a house that preserves the creativity and history of the Danish Golden Age then make sure you drop in at the Bakkehus Museum.
