Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle
Copenhagen
Frederiskborg Castle or Palace is a castle in Hillerod, Denmark, Northwest of Copenhagen. It was built as King Christian IV's royal residence, but now hosts a number of cultural treasures at the Museum of National History.
Frederiksborg Palace was begun in the mid 1500s but most of the architecture you can see today was built during the renaissance in the 1600s. The castle is located in the middle of three islands on a beautiful lake in Hillerod and features sweeping gables, sandstone decorations and copper-covered roofs and spires.
There is a beautiful baroque garden that was built in the 1720s under the supervision of famous architect Johan Kornelius Kriger. The garden is symmetrical and stunning and was fully restored to its original, glorious vision in the 1990s.
The National Museum of history has a breathtaking collection and is most famous for its portraits and historical paintings. There are also various drawings and pieces of furniture. The portrait collection numbers over 10,00, from the 1500s up to the present day. Tragically, many were lost during a fire in 1859.The historical paintings collection features art from prestigious Danish artists depicting important events in Danish history, from the coronation of kings to military battles.
After (or even before!) your visit, take a long, slow stroll through Copenhagen´s magnificent Baroque Gardens with its multitude of details and separate areas to explore.
There is also a museum shop on site where you can get mementos from the day, and various activities for children. Frederiksborg Castle and the National Museum of History are well worth a visit if you are in or even near Hillerod and would like to learn more about Denmark's rich history.
