Description

Step inside one of Copenhagen's most awe-inspiring landmarks – Frederik's Church, popularly known as the Marble Church (Marmorkirken) – on this 2-hour guided tour that brings together royal history, architectural ambition, and spiritual heritage. I. Church Exterior – Admire the exterior, commissioned by King Frederik V and designed by Niels Eigtved in 1740. Learn how the foundation stone was laid on 31 October 1749, and how the project faced immediate challenges. Hear how Eigtved died in 1754, and by 1770 the plans were abandoned, leaving the church a half-finished ruin for nearly 150 years. II. The Dome – See the crowning glory: its 31-metre-diameter dome, the largest in Scandinavia. Inspired by St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, it rests on 12 columns with 12 large windows flooding the interior with Nordic light. Learn how the dome was finally completed in 1894 under architect Ferdinand Meldahl. III. Main Altar – Admire the altarpiece, painted by Heinrich Hansen, which depicts Christ's entry into Jerusalem. IV. Royal Pews – See the royal pews, located opposite Amalienborg Palace, which have witnessed countless royal ceremonies, weddings, and state occasions. V. The Pipe Organ – Discover the magnificent organ, built in 1963 by Rolf Graae, which features 51 stops across four divisions. VI. Statues of Saints – Admire the exterior walls, decorated with 32 biblical figure statues, including the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard and theologian N.F.S. Grundtvig. VII. Dome Climb & Panoramic Views (Optional) – Subject to availability and seasonal opening, you may climb approximately 260 steps to the outer walkway for breathtaking panoramic views over Copenhagen's rooftops and Amalienborg Palace. The dome climb requires a separate ticket and is not included in the tour price. If the dome climb is unavailable during your visit, the guided tour of the church's interior and exterior will continue as scheduled. VIII. Royal & Religious Stories – Throughout the tour, your guide will share fascinating tales of the church's 145-year construction saga, its deep connection with the Danish monarchy, and its enduring role in the nation's spiritual life. Your ticket includes the guided tour. After the tour, you are free to stay and explore the church at your own pace. Please note: This is a guided walking tour with a live, English-speaking local guide. The tour begins at the church's main entrance (Frederiksgade 4) and concludes inside the church. The church is open Mon, Tue, Thu, Sat: 10:00–17:00; Wed: 10:00–18:30; Fri, Sun: 12:00–17:00. The tour operates in all weather – please dress appropriately. Cancellation Policy – Dome Climb Availability: The dome climb is an optional add-on and is not a core component of this guided tour. If the dome climb is unavailable due to maintenance, seasonal closure, or other reasons, the guided walking tour of the church will continue as scheduled.
