Description

If you are going to get to the heart of hygge, you need to go back in time. Byegin our Copenhagen tour near the characteristic yellow houses of Nyboder, a famed district that was built by King Christian IV in the 17th century to house the growing Royal Danish Navy. Walk down the small streets of Nyboder, ending the area walk with a cup of coffee and a Danish breakfast pastry. As you reach Kongens Have (The King’s Garden), hear the dramatic story of how the once-royal park came to be one of the first public parks in the world. As you search for more hygge, continue to wander some of Copenhagen’s oldest and most charming streets, chatting about the meaning of hygge and sharing hygge experiences, before you cross Strøget - one of the longest pedestrian streets in the world, where you will be told about Danish design and how this plays a significant role in Danish homes and hearts.   Continue to Nyboder to see the world’s 1st public housing project, which dates back to the 17th century. Pass more recent examples of social housing, and discuss how such developments are a symbol of the changes Denmark went through after World War II. As you search for more hygge, wander some of Copenhagen’s oldest streets. Upon arrival at Strøget, the longest pedestrian street in the world, pause at the Stork Fountain to hear about the anti-establishment cultures the city has hosted over the years. Next, make a quick snack stop at a local café - a great example of hygge culture - and enjoy a cup of coffee and slice of cake. Walk past the castles that now house the government offices and parliament. Your guide will talk about the formal and informal ways that Denmark is governed, and how the country has succeeded in creating a system with a very high degree of trust and confidence. See the hidden library garden, where Copenhageners go when they need a quiet moment in the city center. Pass the impressive Royal Library, before boarding the harbor bus to the islands of Brygge. Chat about the green systems in Danish society en route to Brygge, and discover an area that has been transformed from industrial use to become a highly livable urban area. You will finish your tour in a street café on a quiet street located in the city centre, where you will experience hygge in its purest form.
